Food for the Soul

“I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book.”  Groucho Marx

Reading happens to be on my top five list of things I LUUURRRVVEEE doing...yet, I've only managed to read one and half a book since my arrival in the states.  Back in SA, I had no DSTV which I loved as this enabled me to indulge in the simple pleasure of being curled up in my bed and being lost in the author's world.  I miss that!!  With that said, I would like to share with you the books that I hold dear to my heart as they've either, taught me something, comforted me, revealed things about me but most importantly have assured me that I am not alone on this journey confronted with obstacles.

My bible...can't even begin to imagine my life without this book right here!!

Paulo Coelho's Collection, one of my favourite authors of all times.
Quote from the book:
“Do not read, as children do, to amuse yourself, or like the ambitious, for the purpose of instruction. No, read in order to live.”
― Gustave Flaubert

Need I even comment on this book?
We've all read it and LOVED it.
Can we please not discuss the movie, what I let down!!
I actually fell asleep at the cinema!!
Quote from the book:
"A true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you
everything that’s holding you back, the person who brings you to your own
attention so you can change your life.  A true soul mate is probably the most
important person you’ll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and
smack you awake.  But to live with a soul mate forever.  Nah.  Too painful.
Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself
to you, and then they leave.  And thank God for it"

This one of those books that changed my life...if you've never read or heard of it, do yourself a favour and get yourself a copy.
Quote from the book:
"When you are not happy where you are, and you are not quite sure if you want to leave or how to leave, you are in the meantime.  Its a state of limbo.  You are hanging on, ready to let go, afraid to fall, not wanting to hurt yourself, afraid you will hurt someone else.  In the meantime, you pray the other person will let go first so that you will not feel guilty"

I got this book as a gift from a dear friend of mine a couple of years back.  Single ladies out there, get yourself a copy.
Quote from the book:
“Intimacy without commitment is defrauding. Intimacy without friendship is superficial. A relationship based on solely physical attraction and romantic feelings will only last as long as the feelings last.”

The best fiction book I've ever read, it is BRILLIANT!!
Quote from the book:
“It's a strange paradox that a man gifted with too many talents can fritter them all away without developing a single one to its full.”

Conceptia recommended this and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Quote from the book:
“We must see all scars as beauty. Okay? This will be our secret. Because take it from me, a scar does not form on the dying. A scar means, 'I survived'.”

These are not even half the books I've read but they're definitely ones that have stood out from the rest.  I have been reading What is the What by Dave Eggers and this book has taken me so long to read...NOT because its slow or boring, if anything it is astonishing, eye opening and heart breaking.  I just haven't made the time as I'm always on my laptop#hidesface

I plan to finish this book before Christmas as I am planning on getting myself "Everyday is Friday" by Joel Osteen.

I would like to hear back from you guys on which books have had a great impact on your life thus far.

“The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things - which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand has come out, and taken yours”
Alan Bennet, The History Boys:  The Film

I will leave you with the following scripture;  Matthew 4v4: But Jesus answered, "It is written:  'Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God"

I know not everyone enjoys reading but the digital world has introduced all sorts of alternatives;  Kindle, Nook, Audio Books etc. I'd suggest you invest in one or get your boyfriend or girlfriend to get it for you for Christmas and slip involuntarily into another skin, voice and soul.

Stay Blessed xoxox

Hey Neo, LOVE that you're getting back into reading!!

Honestly I have to say Skinny Dip by Carl Hiaasen is a serious not-to-miss!

A review:

"Skinny Dip" may be the best beach read of the summer! Carl Hiaasen's satire and dark humor do wonders for crime fiction.

Joey Perrone, the almost-murdered wife of corrupt Charles "Chaz" Perrone, makes it back to shore after her husband tosses her overboard a cruise ship, far off Key West's coast. Thanks to a floating bale of marijuana and the assistance of Mick Stranahan, a burnt-by-love ex-cop, she doesn't sink. Oh no! Joey lives for pay-back.

The lovely, curvaceous Joey recovers her strength, mental and physical, at the island home of her gallant rescuer Mike, who is the victim of six failed marriages. Instead of going to the police, however, she decides to play dead. She persuades Mike to help her mess with Chaz's mind while she figures out why he tried to kill her.

This is a fast paced, fun, often hilarious read with wonderful characters...and humor galore, if you laugh at dark things and enjoy farce mixed with your suspense. I really enjoyed it.

Let me know if you liked it! (should you read it haha)

I am big on reading the classics. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë is my most recent read. I am suggesting it because the story focuses on the growth of an orphan who finds her place in the world. Her character is headstrong while keeping a healthy curiosity. The book is beautifully written. I unfortunately have been devoted to a handful of television shows but when I get the time to read that time is always so precious to me.

Ngiyabonga Neo for this peace. I also utterly enjoyed reading Elizabeth's EAT,PRAY, LOVE but was not quite thrilled about the movie. My old time favourite book has to be Alon Paton's Cry The Beloved Country, I just cannot get over the lessons learnt in that book - forgiveness and being able to tolerate and live as one as humans . hey my love,
I so agree with your comments on Eat,pray,Love - The movie. In saying this, i have to add that i watched it a second time...(lol, why would i put myself through torture again) expecting absolutely nothing - and I loved it!

There were so many messages that i had not seen watching it the first time. I even recommended it to Kiyash. she loved it too.

so give it another go, no expectations obviously and see how it goes.

Love you, as always.
Chrissy
